		<description>SPATIAL ECOLOGIES - COUNTER BODIES II

The effects of an ongoing climate catastrophe mark the landscapes of East Anglia, impacting ecosystems and the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities. As the crisis deepens, artists and designers are left questioning whether conventional, studio-bound practices are adequate to serve the region’s communities in a time of crisis.

The Spatial Ecologies project began in 2024 as a research-led attempt to broach those questions. In one-week intensive courses, an international group of tutors and students from across disciplines field-test post-studio methods. Building on insights from last year’s pilot, the 2025 summer course takes these first steps beyond the studio. The course is organised around a two-day field trip to Halvergate Marshes and Breydon Water in the Norfolk Broads.

Halvergate Marshes and Breydon Water, located within the Broads National Park, are among the country’s most climate-vulnerable areas. Here, the meeting between land and water is blurry and ambiguous. Tidal creeks and plateaus, the results of medieval peat excavation, have become enclosures and grazing land for sheep and cattle. Further inundation is prevented by a network of pumps, windmills, dykes, and drainage ditches. Such flat land resists legibility. From our point of view, the flatness makes it hard to judge distance, to train the eye, and to orient the body. Where dramatic landscapes invite exploration, subjugation, and exploitation, flat ones ask us for quieter attention - and for tolerance of not knowing.

This year, Spatial Ecologies invites you to embrace this not-knowing. During the week, we will attune to the slow, off-beat rhythms of the site. We will explore ecological and collaborative approaches to image-making that require sensitivity to place, to listening, and to how we move through it. Working with mark-making, movement performance, and deep listening as methods, we will engage with the softer, slower, and boggier life-worlds of the communities - human and more-than-human - that share this terrain.

We have invited experts, artists, designers, and researchers to contribute to the course.

These include Andrew Farrell (Broads Authority), Jonathan P. Watts, James Hepper,

Geraldine Padilla Matamoros, and Neil Bousfield. In addition, we welcome guest critics Prof.

Teresa Stoppani, Prof. Ellie Nixon, and Ben McDonnell. Course outcomes are displayed in the exhibition When it’s gone, it’s gone, curated by Matthew Bennington, Roter Su, and Kathryn Hammond.

The course is organised by the Architecture and Interior Design Programme, and supported&#38;nbsp;by the Broads Authority, the RSPB, and Hahnmühle UK.

Spatial Ecologies - Counter Bodies
The focus of this one-week short course hosted by Norwich University of the Arts, was to formulate new creative approaches adequate for communicating and addressing the urgent problems related to a deepening climate catastrophe.

Retiring to our studios, we iterated and prototyped sustainable solutions. However, design anthropologists have begun to ask: what if there is a problem is how and where we practice? They urge creative practitioners to get “out of the studio”, exchanging the practices it affords for a more direct engagement with the ecologies that we are part of.

It is this question, and those that follow from it, that the Spatial Ecologies course invited the participants to consider: 1) how to escape the physical and allegorical enclosure of the studio. 2) how designs embed into the environments where they exist. 3) how learning from them can inform our creative processes.

We chose Seahenge as the starting point for your work with spatial ecologies. Seahenge is one of two henges discovered in the 1990s in Holme-next-the-Sea near King’s Lynn (where it is now on display at the local museum). The henges are a man-made, wooden structures that had cosmological and spiritual uses for Bronze-age East Anglians. According to archaeologist David A. Nance the Holme henges, including Seahenge, are:

“Best explained as independent ritual responses to reverse a period of severe climate deterioration recorded before 2049 BC” (2024, p.88)

In its original location Seahenge was uniquely embedded in Norfolk’s landscape. The henge afforded communion with – and was a measure of its environment. These qualities, so absent in contemporary design, means Seahenge is an exemplar for how we today may design to reconnect with our environment.

As part of the short course, the participants were asked to produce a device that they brought to Holme-next-the-Sea. These devices made a speculative surveying of the original Seahenge site possible. Their survey would then inform the collaborative creation of a panorama of that landscape, documenting their creative intervention there.&#38;nbsp;
The Counterbody performance sprung out the investigations. The project was conceived as relay performances where the participants, in formations reminiscent of forensic work or beachcombing, engage with the environment through systematic movement and with a focus on macro and micro scales at which the coast and the sea affect each other. The project is planned to continue along the Norfolk and Suffolk coastline, involving a collaborative, ritualised reenactments of geological processes.Elin Eyborg Lund and Christian Petersen are summer school directors, while Kirsty Badenoch,&#38;nbsp;Sarah de Villiers&#38;nbsp;and Gustavo Balbela de Azambuja are tutors, Ben McDonnell and Teresa Stoppani are guest critics of the project.

		<description>
MAKER - MARKER

South America fits into Africa like a jigsaw piece. This simple, almost banal observation became the starting point for the German meteorologist Alfred Wegener’s investigations in the beginning of the 20th century. With this simple observation, he moved his perspective from the movements of water and air in the atmosphere above our heads to the movements of the tectonic plates in the crust of the Earth that shape our continents. From time measured in days to time measured in eons.

Outside Reykjavík, a 3 m tall pillar rises above ground as an empty podium. The concrete pillar that stands as an enigmatic marker, was meant to carry an optical instrument that with high precision could determine the exact position of the plates in relation to the celestial bodies. The pillar is called the Wegener-Column. A twin was meant to be built in Greenland and Wegener’s hypothesis, would suggest that the two pillars would move apart because of the tectonic movements.

In 1930 plate tectonics was far from being an accepted theory, and to weaken his argument further, Wegener had placed his column in Western Iceland that floats on the same tectonic plate as Greenland. Wegener was right in his assumption, however wrong in his experiment. During the expedition to Greenland, he died from extreme exhaustion on a cold November day in 1930.

Alfred Wegener led my way to Berlin, along the Spree Valley and towards his Postdam laboratory. Wegener’s hypothesis was sound, yet he might lead me astray. The Spree Valley is like most of Berlin, a huge clay, sand, and gravel deposit saturated in water. It is part of building the ever-moving swamp of the metropolis.

Movement Performances, just as scientific investigations, leave behind a physical residual. This residual has marks of a process and acts as a maker for the given tasks, like a stage prop or a technical tool do.

I call these residuals for markers, and they have been the scope for the artistic research in Berlin, at Fieldstations and Filmexlorer’s residency in Wedding, Berlin. It has formed the project I call Maker – Marker.

Maker – Marker is a performance and film project as part of my ongoing research Attending Spaces, at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where I investigate how movement performance can be used as a tool and a method in the architect’s design process.

In Berlin I elaborate on the idea of exploring the city through its geology. Everywhere in the city big and small construction sites are popping up, forming their own typology in the city, between quick fixes, big visions, revealing the deep layers of historical debris and geological conditions.

The construction sites form a landscape of sand banks that starts shaping their own ecology of slowly creeping plants and temporary new species. In parallel, while sorting building materials in gravel pits, we speed up the time of the natural processes of the historical waterways where the ice age glaciers deposited clay, sand, and gravel along the meltwater rivers, releasing finer and finer sediments while the speed of the rivers slowed down.

It is in this meeting between velocities and processes that the Maker – Marker emerges.

		<description>LEYTON CURTAINS - A MEMBRANE BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

In November 2020, I started an ongoing performance project in Leyton called the Leyton Curtain Performance in North East London in the upholstery company Pekalp of London. I developed the performance that engages in an architectural transformation of the textile and furniture upholstery workshop into a combined production facility and cultural meeting place. The aim of the project is to keep the spirit of the place as a textile workshop when weaved into the new character of the future venue as a cultural meeting place. The focus will be to create ways of letting the combined performative interventions and documentation that will inform the transformation of the place in its architectural design and materiality. The vision&#38;nbsp;of the project&#38;nbsp;is&#38;nbsp;community&#38;nbsp;empowerment&#38;nbsp;with the intention, not only to build a scene&#38;nbsp;for the local community, but most of all to engage the public to participate in its making, choreographed as a task-making movement-performance in the specific site.

Increasingly it has become clearer that the approach I apply in my research projects, is a translation from the experiences of performance making into the methodology of architectural design. It is applying the understanding from one field into another. My arguments are therefore typically based on figures of speech in the form of analogies that I have taken from performance making and applied into architecture.&#38;nbsp;

On the back wall in the Leyton workshop, there is a row of templates and patterns hanging for the cabinet makers. In the foreground the photo pliant pieces of textile a framing the view. My project vibrates between the two positions, between the intentional patterns and the curious attention to draping textiles.

2500 Bricks

2500 Bricks is a film interpretation of a movement performance that was played out and documented on the construction site of Wonderfruit Festival in Pattaya, Thailand in December 2019. The performative method applied was task making, carefully choreographed around the making of 2500 sun dried bricks that constructed an undulating paved pathway through the festival grounds. The performance explored how the chosen material became a ‘demanding prop’ that changed the combined ensemble of dancers and brickmakers into a coherent collective. The festival audience witnessed how the path moved forward each day, shaping the contour of the landscape – an obvious stage where passers-by from the festival would gather to observe the path in progress.&#38;nbsp; By cultivating the positions of dancers and brick makers with mutual respect and curiosity the roles increasingly overlapped as our costumes became increasingly stained. The festival guests witnessed the emerging ensemble.&#38;nbsp; I did the performance in parallel with the work taking place at the Festival in collaboration with two brick masters A and Ga, two sculpturers Teeraporn Khuankhwaisap and Pongsakorn Srimuang and my photographer Laurence Moss.

The project was in collaboration Wonderfruit Festival and Ab Rogers Design.

A
Walk Through Maggie’s

A
Walk Through Maggie’s was performed and documented on the construction site of
the new Maggie’s Centre in Sutton, designed by Ab Rogers Design.

The
film augmented time-lapse technique in my performative practice to explore
architectural spaces and human situations. The method was to move
ultra-slowly through the site adjusting the pace of my movements to the
expected speed of the film played afterwards. I
collaborated with film maker and photographer Brian McClave, who runs Site-Eye,
a company that makes time lapse films for construction sites and my
photographer and editor photographer Laurence Moss. While performing, I became a familiar prop, a friendly alien over the
two days of filming. In a scene I passed on a shovel to a worker, and my slow
time met the worker’s fast time in a glimpse, sparking a touchpoint that broke
the worker’s time bubbles and offered a coherent perspective of their divided
tasks.
I
n the
subsequent cinema screening at ArchLight Cinema the building workers saw
themselves doing their regular work in a twisted reality, suggesting a new collective
awareness of a connected process.

The
project was in collaboration with Site-Eye, Sir Robert McAlpine and Ab Rogers
Design.

124 Ubrellas
The 2 hour performance took place a t the Eco P avilion, one of the 5 pavilions I designed fusing my design work at Ab R ogers Design and my own practice as perfomance maker.
Because of wind and sun the pavilion needed a constant gardener. In the morning, the structure would open like a blossoming flower, forming a vibrantly colored central canopy.
In the evening, it would be transformed into a forest of singular poles. Counting the 124 handcrafted, hand-painted, cotton Chiang Mai Umbrellas. The performance was a ritual
that between performaner and audience explored space through a directed movement, and engaging with elements specific to the ar chitecture and its programming.The
project was in collaboration Wonderfruit Festival and Ab Rogers Design.

Attending Spaces

‘Attending Spaces’ was the fir st in a series of site-specific performances. In a close collaboration between architect and performers, hybrid methods were explored in 1:1 and iterated through improvisations at the performance venue, Testbed 1. In ‘Attending Spaces’ the performers Harvey Lancaster-Rous, Letizia Binda-Partensky, and Sophie Connon will engage in Sisyphean manual labour. The performance continuously evolved over the four days, within a space filled with slowly hardening concrete canvas off-cuts. Concrete canvas is a geo-textile used for large-scale landscaping projects. The audience were encouraged to come back and witness the progress of the performance. Social interactions should define the built envir onment. A subset of these social interactions are tasks, chores and work, we do to create and main tain relationships in our everyday lives. This task making is central to the research project’s choreographed investigation, in shaping a new kind of spatial awareness.

The project has been made possible in collabor ation with late Will Alsop, director of aLLDesign and Anna Furse from Goldsmiths University.

The Danish Arts Foundation, Dreyers Fond and Danish A ssociation of Architects have supported the pr oject.

		<description>
The Tidal Gardener

I’m interested in the particular places that do not just offer spatial framing, ambience representations or references. With this project I’ve looked for a specific site tha t carries an e vent.
Instead of the ambient spaces, I’m looking for the unavoidable event that places can offer.Like the gardener in her garden, the Tidal Gardener in the riverbed must accept the tidal forces and

work with the pressures of the environment. In my performance she cultivates the very edge of the water line of River Thames by Battersea Bridge, by pulling a line of fabric so it alwa ys is aligned with the water line, continuing this task from flood to ebb.&#38;nbsp;
